This index is based on a unique methodology that links the results of subjective life-satisfaction surveys to the objective determinants of quality of life across countries. The survey results seem to show that an interaction between modernity and tradition is key in determining life satisfaction.
For example, Ireland, which took the top slot, successfully combines the most desirable elements of the new—material wellbeing, low unemployment rates, political liberties—with the conservation of certain satisfaction-enhancing, or modernity-cushioning, elements of the old, such as stable family life and the preservation of community. Its scores on all of these factors are above the EU-15 average, easily offsetting its slightly lower scores on health, climate and gender equality.
